Online MovieLearning: Online Learning from home

To meet the need to learn at home and online, we offer several online courses. Double Healix offers various online courses on the MovieLearning platform. The teaching material is richly illustrated with film clips. These film clips are carefully selected from the best feature films and documentaries. They provide inspiring and educative examples of human behaviour.

Learning by observing film clips – or observational learning – stimulates you to bring out the best in yourself and each other. The MovieLearning method shows what can unite us as humanity, and how we can celebrate our differences. In our online courses we not only provide examples of young and old people, men and women, but also of many cultures. From Japan to Brazil, to Iceland, to South Africa, to New Zealand.

Learning by observing film clips

We have been teaching through the use of movie clips for many years in our lectures and courses. We also create online learning platforms for professions and organisations that want to improve their corporate culture or help further develop their leaders and teams.

Take an online course

We have a diverse range of online courses that you can take on MovieLearning. It is open to anyone who wants to learn online and become proficient in important social skills such as leadership, collaboration, education, and sustainability.

Advantages of learning from movie clips:
  • Movie clips show in a concrete way what social skills look like. They show the different forms of, for example, ‘acting with integrity’, ‘having a good conversation’, or ‘taking responsibility’. They increase clarity and make the skills lively, versatile, and tangible.

  • The movie clips used in our online courses appeal not only to a rational level, but also to an emotional level. As a result, viewers are challenged to further investigate what the displayed has to do with their own life.

  • During observational learning, it is made clear how you can tackle a certain task. During this process, you prepare yourself optimally for “doing it yourself”. Our “mirror cells” ensure that we learn quickly when we feel addressed.

  • Viewing movie clips is experienced by everyone as a pleasant and socially safe way to engage in behavioural change. This is because, when discussing the clips, it initially does not seem to be about yourself or about your team or organisation. You can then decide for yourself whether and when to make the transition to more insight into your own situation.

The MovieLearning Foundation

The MovieLearning Foundation aims to promote an Ecology of Meaning. We do this through an interactive learning environment based on film images and stories. In this way, the MovieLearning Foundation promotes inclusivity in thinking and acting, empathetic scope, and sustainability.

The proceeds from the use of MovieLearning by financially well endowed organizations are used by the MovieLearning Foundation in order to work on themes and for clients for which little money is usually available, such as upbringing, education and sustainability.

The MovieLearning Foundation works closely with the Double Healix organization which, in addition to the construction of the online learning environment, also provides live training.

MovieLearning

These 12 basic principles are put together in tensionfields. This way we prevent examples from working too one-sided. After all, professionalism should always go hand in hand with humanity and inspiration, decisiveness with reflection and patience, optimism with profound insight, release with adjustment, and diversity with unity. This allows you to better handle dilemmas, reconcile apparent contradictions – also between people – and be more present, for yourself, for others and for what the world needs.

The online MovieLearning courses and learning platforms can be used separately from our live training courses, but also in conjunction with them in blended learning trajectories.

Metaphors

MovieLearning also shows the educational power of metaphors. Examples that may seem far removed from you are still very enlightening and inspiring in your own learning process. Behaviour seen in a different line of work is still very useful for learning about your own field.

The Double Healix model

The MovieLearning method is based on the narrative approach of the Double Healix model. This model provides insight into the developmental process of people by dividing it into a 12-step story. This allows you to better recognize which phase you (or your team, your organization, your family, the world) are (is) currently in, and anticipate the phases that will follow. The model therefore provides tools for each developmental process, and it offers comfort and direction in difficult times.

Micro-learning

By means of the “micro-learning” method we clarify step by step details that you normally do not even consider. This stimulates you to observe better, so that you are also better able to learn new behavior. MovieLearning also makes connections to the bigger picture. It provides insight into and makes you experience which principles work in human behavior and how they can be used constructively.
